$CLOUT Poetry - Gum Disease is a Vampire

ramblingrose

A poem and a dental hygiene warning.

alternate text

I wake up in a cold sweat at 4 am
Wounds whining within a mouth stabbed shut

I lament the losses I’ve brought on in spades
And the spade that dug out my latest rotten friend

I’m clinging to what remains
Whilst dreading its trials with an inflamed jury

Too many soldiers have been taken before their time
Now discarded shards, decomposing somewhere along a distant line

Those that remain need a white blanket to cover the dangers
Of a world that easily breaks them down

I’ve never had the strength to offer safe passage home
Only arriving in a tragic mess or body bag

And when the angriest of drill sergeants screams spit into my eyes
I can see that I am too late to help myself

This bloody jelly will heal over soon
But my mouth will continue to throb within its coffin

For you see, gum disease is a vampire
Once welcomed inside, it won’t ever leave

It will drain your hope of returning to a time of soft and supple pink
Whilst sucking out the pulp of your once radiant smile

It will comfortably fester in your darkest of corners
And torment your senses until all your soldiers lay to rest.
